Top Five Songs About Summer

Summer is here and the sun is out. It's time to crank up the BBQ and drink icy cold beers all weekend. There needs to be a soundtrack to this though, what are your top 5 songs about summer?

Top Five Songs About Drugs

See I think drugs have done some good things for us. If you don't think drugs have done good things for us then do me a favor. Go home tonight and take all of your records, tapes and all your CD's and burn them. Because, you know all those musicians who made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreal fucking high on drugs, man.

Drugs have been the subject of countless songs over the years. We can all name "Luce in the Sky With Diamonds" (though John Lennon always denied it), but what else gets you going?

Top Five Album Cover Art

If you're anything like me, you spent years flicking through the liner notes of every new cd you bought and studying them with intent. The cover art is the center piece of the physical packaging of a new album, so which albums cover art stand out best to you?

I'm thinking there is two trains of thought here - iconic album cover art and ones that simply appeal to you. Choose what suits you best in the comments.

Top Five Debut Albums

There are plenty of candidates for the top five greatest debut albums of all time. Some came from bands that went on to have long and successful careers, some came and then disappeared for whatever reason, and some just found it too hard to follow their own opening act.

Here are my top five debut albums:

1.       Are You Experienced? – The Jimi Hendrix Experience

2.       My Aim Is True – Elvis Costello

3.       Freak Out! – Frank Zappa & The Mothers of Invention

4.       The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses

5.       De La Soul – 3 Feet High And Rising

Hard to go past somebody who, on their very first album, made every one of his peers seem hopelessly out of date.

This could have been a top twenty or more, but I was strict on myself, limiting it to five with no “honourable mentions” or other cheats to fit a few more in. My top two are absolutely set in stone, but the rest could have been shuffled around with others from the top ten. I leaned toward personal favourites over influential classics.

Let us know your own top five in the comments. I’m interested to see how many of my near-misses make it in to others’ lists.

Top Five Songs About Science

I was just guessing
At numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart

Questions of science
Science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart

Yes, I just quoted a Coldplay song. Not sure it's actually about Science though. What are your top five songs about science?

Top Five Songs About Australia

We all love Australian music, but what about the songs about Australia? It can be a song that is set in Australia, references it or simply talks about something Australian.

And yes, we all know about Land Down Under. Let's try for something else. Oh, and no John Williamson either, ok? Or Slim Dusty. I could go on....

Top Five Songs Over 10 Minutes In Length

Ok, this should be an easier one (I think). This is our first one not from the movie, post up your top five songs over 10 minutes in length. I'll post up mine a little later to get the ball rolling.

Oh, and we'll accept live versions of songs if they've appeared on an album, i.e. like every single song Led Zeppelin has released on a live album.
